McCain Changes His Tune on Gay Adoption
There are countless children in this country who do not have a stable home and loving parents. Children who manage to get adopted have the potential for a much happier and more successful life in the long-run. However, many social conservatives feel that it is much better for these children to remain wards of the state rather than to be adopted into the stable home of a loving, same-sex couple.
Flip
Recently, the New York Times wrote an article that tried to define John McCain's conservative credentials. From that article: Mr. McCain, who with his wife, Cindy, has an adopted daughter, said flatly that he opposed allowing gay couples to adopt. "I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don’t believe in gay adoption," he said.
Flop
After some outrage in the gay community about this particular remark, the McCain camp "clarified" its position on gay marriage. "John McCain could have been clearer in the interview in stating that his position on gay adoption is that it is a state issue. ... He was not endorsing any federal legislation," a campaign statement said."Sen. McCain's expressed his personal preference for children to be raised by a mother and a father wherever possible," the statement added. "However, as an adoptive father himself, McCain believes children deserve loving and caring home environments, and he recognizes that there are many abandoned children who have yet to find homes. John McCain believes that in those situations that caring parental figures are better for the child than the alternative." We are happy with the new stated position and hope Senator McCain does not change his mind again in the face of more conservative anger.
