Keeping track of John McCain's positions. Because he can't.

Give My Regards to Castro

Has the Cuban embargo accomplished much? The Castro family is still in power. The citizens of Cuba continue to suffer from it, however. The US has successfully worked at normalizing relationships with other countries that were once foes to mutual advantage. Surely Senator McCain could help us move forward on the issue.

Flip

During John McCain's primary battle in 2000, he claimed he would help to normalize relationships with Cube in much the same way, to his credit, he helped normalize relationships with Vietnam. Such a relationship could benefit both Americans, but especially Cuban citizens. He was pretty explicit about this:

“I’m not in favor of sticking my finger in the eye of Fidel Castro. In fact, I would favor a road map towards normalization of relations such as we presented to the Vietnamese and led to a normalization of relations between our two countries.”

Flop

Nope. Mostly to appeal to Cuban-American voters, McCain pledged to continue the decades-long embargo if elected President. Clearly this was a case of pandering to a small voting bloc in Florida at the expense of reasonable foreign policy.
