Abortion: The Extreme Cases
Abortion is no doubt a topic that incites some of the fiercest debates and strongest opinions, both among those who favor it as an option and those who favor its prohibition. However, there is one touchy issue surrounding abortion that has remained much less contested. That is, so-called "extreme cases," where the mother became pregnant through rape or incest. Senator McCain has moved decidedly to the right even in these cases.
Flip
In April of 2007, ABC News reported that McCain had told them that he "still [wanted] to change the GOP's abortion platform to explicitly recognize exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother."
Further back, during the 2000 primary against George W. Bush, McCain vigorously supported this viewpoint.
Flop
Now that he is the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party, John McCain has faced very outspoken criticism of his previous suggestions for modifying the platform.
The official platform has yet to be settled upon, but it seems increasingly likely that the changes will not be made to the existing platform.
Will McCain stick to his guns or will he again capitulate to the right-wing of his party? Time will tell, but odds say he won't stand up on this issue.
We shall see.
