One of the defining contrasts between John McCain and Barack Obama has been Obama's desire for a timetable to withdraw US troops from Iraq. Apparently there is no longer a contrast.

Jim Webb and Chuck Hegel introduce a bill to expand GI education benefits for the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. Unbelievably, McCain opposes the bill. But what happens later is even more unbelievable.

John McCain's standard line on Iraq is that he was a critic of the War until the Surge, which he says is effective. How well does this claim actually hold up?

Remember the Cold War? A major portion of the Cold War involved fighting proxy battles through a number of countries. The strategies included trying to overthrow the governments of Communist countries with internal uprisings, such as the Bay of Pigs invasion. Does John McCain want a repeat, or does he foresee a different vision of international diplomacy? Apparently, he wants both.
